Agent of the Shinigami

20 episodes19 canon1 filler1 deaths

Ichigo Kurosaki is a fifteen-year-old high schooler whose only unusual trait is the ability to see ghosts. That changes the night Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami sent from Soul Society, appears in his bedroom hunting a Hollow that has marked his family for slaughter. Forced to choose between watching his sisters die and accepting a power he never asked for, Ichigo runs his own chest through with Rukia's Zanpakutō and becomes a substitute Shinigami.

What starts as a clean-up duty quickly snowballs. Ichigo's classmates Orihime Inoue and Yasutora 'Chad' Sado start awakening their own dormant spiritual powers. Uryū Ishida, the last Quincy in Karakura Town, declares war on Hollows just to spite the Shinigami. The reclusive shopkeeper Kisuke Urahara, who turns out to be a former captain of Soul Society, watches everything from the sidelines.

The arc ends not with a battle but with an arrest. Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki. Rukia's adoptive brother, arrive in Karakura Town to drag Rukia home. Transferring her powers to a Human is a capital crime, and Ichigo's first attempt to stop them ends with his Zanpakutō shattered, his chest pierced by Senbonzakura, and Rukia gone. Everything that follows is Ichigo's refusal to accept that ending.

Soul Society

Ten days after Rukia is taken, Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryū and Yoruichi Shihōin smash through the gates of the Seireitei to rescue her from execution. The plan is suicide. Soul Society fields thirteen Captain-level Shinigami, dozens of officers, and an entire bureaucracy designed to crush exactly this kind of intrusion. Within hours of arrival the group is scattered across the Seireitei, fighting battles they have no business surviving.

Ichigo trains under Yoruichi to achieve Bankai in three days, a feat that should take a decade, while everyone else fights for their lives in parallel storylines. Renji unleashes his Bankai against Byakuya on the Sōkyoku bridge and loses. Kenpachi Zaraki cuts down Komamura and Tōsen with a smile. Yoruichi takes on her old protégée Suì-Fēng, Mayuri Kurotsuchi turns Uryū into an experiment, and Ichigo tears through Captains by the dozen on his way to Rukia.

Then the truth lands. Aizen, the gentle 5th Division captain that everyone thought was dead, is the architect of the entire crisis. He massacred Central 46 weeks ago, manipulated Rukia's execution to recover the Hōgyoku Urahara had hidden inside her Gigai, and walks out of Soul Society with Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen in tow, escaping into Hueco Mundo on a column of Hollow light. Soul Society is fractured. The captains who can still stand know exactly what is coming next.

Anime-original arc. A group of immortal soul-eaters called Bount, humans cursed with the inability to die naturally, forced to consume souls to sustain themselves, emerge from hiding in Karakura Town, hunting both Pluses and humans alike. Ichigo and his friends investigate alongside the Bount-aligned scientist Ran'Tao while reluctant 12th Division researchers from Soul Society arrive to clean up the mess.

The Bount's leader, Jin Kariya, is a charismatic strategist with a wind-based Doll and the explicit goal of toppling Soul Society itself. He slowly gathers his scattered kin. Yoshino, Sawatari, Hō and Ban, Ugaki, Mabashi, and culls those who refuse to follow him. Ichigo's group catches up only after the Bount have already left Karakura behind for their true target.

Anime-original continuation. The Bount infiltrate Soul Society itself, breaching its outer walls under the cover of an artificially-created Hollow swarm. With Karakura's defenders dragged into a defensive war on foreign soil, the Soul Society arc's tensions reignite. Hitsugaya, Yumichika, Renji and Byakuya all join the fray.

Kariya finally reaches the Sōkyoku bridge and triggers Jōkaishō, intending to consume Soul Society's spirit core in a single act of vengeance. Ichigo confronts him alone in the resulting storm of energy. The duel ends with Kariya choosing a death of his own design rather than victory, and with the Bount as a race finally extinct.

Arrancar

34 episodes17 canon17 filler1 deaths

Three months after Aizen's escape. The first Arrancar attack on Karakura Town is led by Yammy Llargo and Ulquiorra Cifer, and Ichigo loses badly. Yammy nearly takes his arm off without releasing his Zanpakutō. Ichigo's Hollow side stirs in the back of his mind, and a stranger in a porkpie hat introduces himself: Shinji Hirako, captain of the 5th Division a hundred years ago, leader of the Visored, eight Shinigami who were Hollowfied by Aizen and exiled when Soul Society could not explain what they had become.

Ichigo spends weeks learning to subjugate his inner Hollow at the Visored warehouse while the Arrancar war heats up. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez crashes into Karakura with his Fracción, kills several officers, and dares Ichigo to a rematch that ends only because Tōsen drags him back to Hueco Mundo. Hitsugaya, Renji, Ikkaku, Yumichika and Rangiku transfer to Karakura full-time as classmates, and the Soul Society brings the war into Ichigo's everyday life.

The arc's final move is the one Aizen wanted all along: Orihime Inoue is taken to Hueco Mundo, alone, with no support, to be used as bait. The Espada line up behind their master at Las Noches and wait for Ichigo to come for her.

Hueco Mundo

Ichigo, Uryū and Chad punch through a Garganta into Hueco Mundo to retrieve Orihime, picking up an exiled child-Arrancar named Nel along the way. Las Noches is a maze of Espada and Privaron, and the rescue group is split apart by the architecture of Aizen's fortress. Each character gets a tower, an Espada, and a fight they barely survive.

Rukia, dragged into the rescue by the captains' refusal to mobilize without Yamamoto's order, is forced into a duel with Aaroniero Arruruerie, an Espada wearing the face and voice of Kaien Shiba, the man whose death she has spent decades grieving. She wins by finally letting Kaien go.

Uryū restores his Quincy powers under his father's bow. Chad awakens the left arm of his Fullbring. Renji and Byakuya cut down Espada Szayelaporro and Zommari respectively, while Mayuri and Kenpachi handle the rest. The arc closes on Ichigo standing across from Ulquiorra at the top of Las Noches, the woman they came to save watching from a balcony, none of them aware that Aizen has already left for Karakura Town.

Anime-original interlude during Hueco Mundo. While the rescue mission is underway, a new captain. Shūsuke Amagai, is appointed to head the 3rd Division in Gin Ichimaru's place. Amagai presents himself as friendly and reform-minded, but his true motivation is revenge against Captain-Commander Yamamoto for an old crime against his father.

The arc plays out across both Karakura Town and Soul Society, drawing in Rurichiyo Kasumiōji, a young clan princess marked for assassination, and the conspiracy that surrounds her. Amagai's plot collapses in a confrontation with Ichigo on the Sōkyoku Hill, and the peace that followed Soul Society's last rebellion holds together by a thread.

The war for the King's Key. Aizen unveils his real strategy: he will destroy Karakura Town to use the souls of its 100,000 residents as the key needed to enter the Royal Realm and kill the Soul King. Yamamoto's response is to swap the entire town with a perfect replica, the real Karakura is in Soul Society, the battlefield is a fake.

Seven captains, three lieutenants and the Visored stand against Aizen, Gin, Tōsen, four top-tier Espada and Wonderweiss Margela. Suì-Fēng and Hachi trap Baraggan in his own Respira. Kyōraku and Ukitake bury Starrk and his soul-half Lilynette together. Hitsugaya is broken trying to reach Aizen through Harribel's Tres Bestias. Komamura cuts down his oldest friend Tōsen after Hisagi pierces Tōsen's hollowfied skull. Hiyori is bisected in front of Shinji.

And it isn't enough. Aizen kills Harribel for losing, ascends past Shinigami and Hollow alike, and is only stopped when Ichigo arrives in the climactic Dangai-trained form Tensa Zangetsu, a black-coated swordsman so still that even Aizen cannot read his Reiatsu. Mugetsu, the Final Getsuga Tenshō, ends the war and erases Ichigo's Shinigami powers along with it. Gin, who spent a hundred years pretending to be Aizen's friend so he could one day stab him in the chest, dies on the same battlefield without telling Rangiku why he did any of it.

A flashback arc set 110 years before the main story. Shinji Hirako captains the 5th Division, with Sōsuke Aizen as his quietly disturbing lieutenant. Kisuke Urahara is promoted to captain of the 12th and founds the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. The Visored, Shinji, Rōjūrō, Love, Hiyori, Lisa, Kensei, Mashiro, Hachi, are all still active captains and lieutenants.

Over the course of seven episodes, every disaster of the modern era is set in motion. Aizen experiments on Shinigami in Rukongai, attempts to forge the Hōgyoku, Hollowfies the Visored to test his early prototypes, and frames Urahara for the resulting deaths. Yamamoto exiles them all. Aizen takes the 5th Division for himself. The Soul Society Ichigo invaded a hundred years later was already poisoned at the root.

Anime-original arc. A mysterious figure named Muramasa hijacks every Zanpakutō spirit in the Soul Society, severing them from their wielders and giving them human form. Senbonzakura, Zabimaru, Hyōrinmaru, Ryūjin Jakka and dozens of others rebel against the Shinigami who once carried them, and the captains find themselves outclassed by their own swords.

The arc gives every major Shinigami a fight against their personified Zanpakutō, finally revealing visual designs and personalities for spirits that had only been hinted at. Muramasa's true goal, releasing his own master Kōga, a corrupted Shinigami sealed in another dimension, slowly emerges, and the climax forces an uneasy alliance between the captains and their reconciled Zanpakutō spirits.

The traitor responsible is Kagerōza Inaba, a 12th Division-affiliated researcher with a personal grudge against Yoruichi and Urahara.

The Reigai outnumber and outmatch the originals, exploiting the captains' own techniques against them. Ichigo is dragged back into Soul Society to fight a war that should not exist while Inaba's true goal, replacing every captain with a perfect copy under his control, slowly unravels.

Lost Substitute Shinigami

23 episodes18 canon5 filler

Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat. Ichigo lives a powerless life, he can no longer see ghosts, no longer hear Zangetsu, no longer fight. Soul Society has all but written him off, and Karakura Town is quiet enough that even Karin and Yuzu have stopped worrying about him. Then Kūgo Ginjō walks into his life and offers him a deal: regain his powers through a different path entirely.

Xcution is a small group of Fullbringers, humans whose mothers were attacked by Hollows during pregnancy, granting them the ability to manipulate the souls of objects. Ichigo trains under Ginjō, Tsukishima, Riruka, Giriko, Yukio and Jackie, and slowly recovers something close to his old strength.

Then Tsukishima's true ability. Book of the End, the power to insert himself into anyone's memories as if he had always been there, turns Ichigo's family and friends against him. The last revelation is the worst: Ginjō was the original Substitute Shinigami before Ichigo, abandoned and erased by Soul Society once they decided he was dangerous, and the entire Xcution arc is a long con to steal Ichigo's power for himself. The captains finally arrive. Renji and Rukia, then Byakuya, Toshiro, Kenpachi, Soifon, and restore Ichigo's Shinigami powers through a ritual blade infused with everyone's Reiatsu. Ichigo cuts down Ginjō, becomes whole again, and the closing shot is the captains walking back into Soul Society knowing that their next war will not be a Hollow war.

Thousand-Year Blood War

45 episodes45 canon11 deaths9 bankai

A thousand years after their first defeat at the hands of Yamamoto, the Quincy return, and they have a name and a leader now. Yhwach, the Father of all Quincy, declares war on Soul Society and gives Yamamoto exactly five days. The Wandenreich, an empire of Sternritter wielding letter-coded Schrift abilities, invades the Seireitei from inside the shadows of the Hollows themselves.

The first invasion is a slaughter. Sasakibe is killed by Driscoll Berci before he can use his Bankai. Komamura, Hitsugaya, Suì-Fēng, Renji, Byakuya, Hisagi and Kensei are all defeated in their own barracks. Yhwach himself appears, only to vanish, and Yamamoto realizes too late that the Yhwach he just killed was Royd Lloyd, a Sternritter capable of perfect impersonation. The real Yhwach descends, steals Yamamoto's Bankai, and beheads the Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13. The Wandenreich withdraws after exactly five hours.

Soul Society regroups under Kyōraku, the new Captain-Commander, and Ichigo is dragged to the Royal Palace by the Zero Division to forge a new Zanpakutō from his true heritage, half Shinigami, half Hollow, and as it turns out, half Quincy. While Ichigo trains, the Wandenreich invades a second time, this time targeting Bankai itself. Captains scramble to fight Sternritter who already know their own techniques. Mayuri performs surgery on himself in the middle of a battle to defeat Pernida Parnkgjas. Hisagi, Hisagi, Rose, Kensei and Shinji activate their Bankai for the very first time on screen. Bambietta is killed and zombified by Giselle. Cang Du is executed by Bazz-B for failure. Uryū Ishida stands in front of Yhwach and is named Sternritter 'A'. The Antithesis. Yhwach's chosen successor, leaving every promise he ever made to Ichigo behind.

The story is still ongoing in the anime, the war has not yet reached the Soul King's palace, the Royal Guard, the Zero Division's confrontation with the Schutzstaffel, or the final battle for the Soul King himself. What has aired covers the first three cours of the Thousand-Year Blood War: forty episodes that show Soul Society lose nearly everything before the counterattack even begins.
