Hanatarō Yamada is the 7th Seat of the 4th Division, which in the Gotei 13 means he is a medic in the division everyone else looks down on. He is nervous, apologetic, physically slight, and assigned to cleaning duty in the Seireitei's sewers when Ichigo Kurosaki first runs into him.

He helps anyway. Hanatarō guides Ichigo through the underside of the Seireitei toward the tower where Rukia Kuchiki is being held, knowing exactly what happens to a 4th Division member caught assisting an intruder. He does it because he had treated Rukia while she was imprisoned and decided she did not deserve what was coming, which is the entire character in one decision.

His Zanpakutō is Hisagomaru, and it is the only healing Zanpakutō in the series. The blade absorbs injuries rather than inflicting them, filling a gauge on the flat as it takes damage in, and once full it converts everything it has stored into a single offensive strike. That is the shape of the 4th Division's whole position: the people who put everyone else back together are also the ones nobody credits with being dangerous, right up until they need to be.
