Izuru Kira is the lieutenant of the 3rd Division, and for most of the series he is a man serving a captain he cannot read. Gin Ichimaru smiled at everyone and told Kira nothing, and Kira followed the orders anyway, including the ones that put him against his own friends during Rukia Kuchiki's execution.

His Zanpakutō suits him unpleasantly well. Wabisuke bends into a squared hook, and every time it strikes something the weight of that thing doubles: a sword, a limb, a person. There is no flash to it. The technique is simply to keep hitting until the opponent cannot lift their own body off the ground, and Kira executes it with the flat competence of someone who does not enjoy his own ability.

He met Momo Hinamori and Renji Abarai at the Academy, on the field exercise where a Hollow killed a classmate and Shūhei Hisagi held it off while the rest of them ran. All three of them came out of that carrying it differently. Kira is gloomy, introspective and visibly short of the confidence a lieutenant is supposed to project, and the series is fairly direct that people underestimate him for it. He is also still standing at the end of a war that killed most of the officers around him.
