Nanao
Ise

Nanao Ise is the lieutenant of the 8th Division, and her captain is Shunsui Kyōraku, which means her job description is roughly to carry a heavy book and hit him with it. She is precise, humourless on duty, and the only reason the division files anything. Kyōraku teases her constantly and she has never once given him the reaction he is fishing for.

The reason she has no Zanpakutō is the arc she eventually gets. The Ise family carries a hereditary sword and a curse attached to it: the blade kills the men the women of the family love, which is why Nanao's mother sealed it away and why Nanao grew up with nothing at her hip. Katen Kyōkotsu, Kyōraku's own Zanpakutō, had been holding her sword inside itself for years.

Kyōraku is her uncle. He tells her so during the Wandenreich war, in the middle of handing her back the weapon her mother hid, and Nanao takes up Shinken Hakkyōken against Lille Barro with a family history she has only just been given. She reflects his attack back at him with it. For a character introduced as a punchline about paperwork, it is a considerable amount of load to carry.
