Background

Ryūsei Kenzaki, called Kenryū, is a retainer of the Kasumiōji clan and Rurichiyo Kasumiōji's protector, a role he takes with a seriousness nobody around him can match. He arrives in the Human World with Enryū to guard the princess in hiding, and immediately makes the situation worse by being incapable of blending in anywhere.

His Zanpakutō is Benishidare, which produces a storm of flower petals, and he is fond of explaining its beauty at length while a fight is happening. The character is written as comic relief and the comedy is entirely at the expense of his dignity, which he defends constantly and never once recovers.

The seriousness underneath is real. Gyōkaku Kumoi's coup against the Kasumiōji house is a genuine threat to a child he has raised, and Kenryū's response to it is to put himself between her and everything, including Shūsuke Amagai at the end, where releasing his Shikai buys Rurichiyo the seconds she needs and does nothing else. He is not strong enough for any of the fights he takes. He takes them in order rather than picking the ones he can win.
