Ururu Tsumugiya works at the Urahara Shop, sweeping the front step and serving customers in a pink skirt, and she is perpetually one wrong word away from bursting into tears. She apologises for selling faulty stock. She apologises for most things.

She is also a weapon. Kisuke Urahara built her, and when a strong enough Hollow gets close she switches into a combat state that has nothing to do with her ordinary personality: flat, precise, and capable of throwing an Arrancar's Fracción through a building. Jinta Hanakari calls it Slaughter Mode and treats it as normal, which tells you what working at that shop is like.

The two registers never quite reconcile, and the series is content to leave them unreconciled. Ururu dug the shaft Ichigo was thrown down for his Hollowfication training, spat on him while he was in it, and would have carried out the rescue operation on her own if Urahara had asked. She takes a mortar cannon to Yammy Llargo without changing expression and then goes back to sweeping. Whatever she was built for, she is fifteen years old in every scene where nothing is attacking.
