LOCATION DATABASE
Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and beyond.
Locations
The places of the Human World, Soul Society, Hueco Mundo and the realms above and below them.
Bount Mansion
A mansion on the edge of Karakura Town that the Bount used as their base while Jin Kariya prepared his move on Soul Society. It is larger on the inside than the outside allows, which is the first sign to anyone visiting that the occupants are not human.
Central 46 Compound
The walled seat of Soul Society's judiciary, holding forty wise men and six judges who decide every law and every sentence. Nobody enters without permission, which is precisely why Aizen killed all forty-six and ran Soul Society from inside their empty chamber for months without anyone noticing.
Shin'ōchikadaikangoku
The great underground prison beneath the Shin'o Academy, built in levels that get worse as they descend. The lowest of them, Muken, holds prisoners the Seireitei has decided should never be seen again, and Aizen is sentenced to twenty thousand years in it.
Charismatic Dr. Mayuri Kurotsuchi's Magical Clinic
The name Mayuri Kurotsuchi gives his own facility in the omake material, treating the 12th Division's research wing as a personal practice. The joke is that it is not really a joke.
Daireishokairō
The Great Spirit Book Gallery beneath the Seireitei, an archive holding the records of Soul Society going back to its founding. It is guarded, unlit, and the only place where the things Central 46 decided to forget are still written down.
Dangai
The precipice world between the Human World and Soul Society, where time runs at a different rate and the Kōryū walls close in on anything that stops moving. The Cleaner sweeps it at intervals. Ichigo's Final Getsuga training happens here because the time distortion is the only way to fit it in.
Forest of Menos
The forest beneath the sands of Hueco Mundo, made of the fused bodies of Gillian-class Hollows and functioning as a nest rather than a wood. Ashido Kanō has been alone in it for centuries, killing what comes out.
Garganta
The tear in space Hollows and Arrancar open to move between worlds, a black rip with nothing underneath it. Crossing requires the traveller to lay a path of Reishi under their own feet, which is why an inexperienced Shinigami falls.
Gatonden
A hall within the Soul King Palace, part of the domain the Royal Guard maintain above Soul Society.
Giant Hollow Fortress
A fortified Hollow structure encountered in the anime's original material, large enough to house a population rather than an individual.
Gin Tonbo
The Silver Dragonfly, a shop in the Seireitei selling accessories to Shinigami with money and taste. Renji Abarai buys his goggles there and Tetsuzaemon Iba buys his sunglasses, which explains a great deal about both of them.
Hell
Where the souls of humans too sinful for Soul Society are sent, including Hollows that killed in life. Togabito are bound there by chains that cannot be broken and guarded by the Kushanāda, and the punishment does not end, because the dead cannot die again.
Hell/Movie Continuity
The version of Hell shown in Hell Verse, structured in descending levels with the Gates of Hell standing at the boundary. The film gives the realm rules the series never established.
Hueco Mundo
The world of the Hollows, a white desert under a permanent crescent moon with quartz trees and nothing living. Las Noches sits at its centre. Souls that fall here do not pass on, and everything in it eats everything else.
Human World
Where the living are, and where most of the series happens despite the other two worlds being more interesting. It is built from Kishi rather than Reishi, which is why a Shinigami needs a gigai to touch anything in it.
Hōōden
The Phoenix Hall in the Soul King Palace, part of Kirio Hikifune's domain within the Royal Guard's territory.
Irazu Sandō
A passage within the Soul King Palace that cannot be entered by anyone the Royal Guard have not admitted.
Kagamino-shi
A city in Japan roughly twenty-two kilometres east of Karakura Town. It gets used when the series needs somewhere close enough to reach and far enough to be outside the usual spiritual saturation.
Karakura High School
The school Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, Yasutora Sado and Uryu Ishida all attend, and the setting for most of the series' ordinary scenes. An unusual proportion of its student body can see ghosts.
Karakura Hospital
The hospital Ryūken Ishida directs, and the largest medical facility in the town. There is a Quincy training ground underneath it, which is not on the floor plan.
Karakura Town
The suburb where the series is set, and a place with an abnormally high concentration of spiritual energy, which is why Hollows keep arriving and why Aizen eventually decides to destroy it to make the Ōken. Most of the population never notices any of it.
Kirinden
Tenjirō Kirinji's domain in the Soul King Palace, built around hot springs that heal injuries faster than any Kido. The treatment is famously unpleasant and Kirinji is famously unsympathetic about that.
Kuchiki Family Manor
The estate of one of the four great noble houses, where Byakuya and Rukia live. Its scale is the point: the Kuchiki keep a household larger than most Rukongai districts and Rukia grew up in one of the poorest of them.
Kurosaki Clinic
The small family clinic Isshin Kurosaki runs out of the front of his house, with the family living above it. It is the most ordinary building in the series and the one most often destroyed.
Las Noches
Aizen's fortress at the centre of Hueco Mundo, an enormous white dome with an artificial sky inside it so its occupants never see the moon. The Espada each hold a tower, and the interior is large enough that crossing it is an arc in itself.
London
The setting of Burn the Witch, split between the ordinary city and Reverse London, where dragons are managed by the Wing Bind organisation rather than killed.
Naruki City
The city where Kūgo Ginjō based Xcution, and where Yasutora Sado grew up. It sits outside Karakura Town's spiritual saturation, which is part of why the Fullbringers could operate there unnoticed.
Nest of Maggots
The Onmitsukido's prison for Shinigami considered too dangerous to release and not guilty enough to execute. Prisoners are unbound and unwatched inside, and the single rule is that leaving means death. Mayuri Kurotsuchi was held here before Kisuke Urahara took him out.
Primordial Sea
The sea beneath the Soul King Palace from which all souls originate and to which they return. It is the closest the series comes to explaining where any of this comes from.
Primordial Sea/Expanded Universe
The novels' treatment of the sea beneath the Soul King Palace, expanding on its role in the cycle of souls.
Rukongai
The districts surrounding the Seireitei, where souls arrive after a Konso and where most of Soul Society actually lives. The numbering runs outward and conditions worsen with it, and the outermost districts are effectively lawless. Rukia, Renji, Kenpachi and Hisagi all come from them.
Seijōtōkyorin
The Sacred Purification Forest, part of the Soul King Palace's grounds.
Seireitei
The walled city at the centre of Soul Society where the Shinigami live and the Gotei 13 are based. The Sekkiseki wall around it blocks spiritual energy entirely, which is why getting in requires a cannon rather than a gate.
Senridama processing factory
The facility where the observation spheres used by the Seireitei are manufactured and maintained.
Senzaikyū
The Shrine of Penitence, the white tower where a Shinigami awaits execution. Rukia Kuchiki is held there for most of the Soul Society arc, and the tower's only window looks directly at Sōkyoku Hill.
Shin'ō Academy
The academy Genryūsai Yamamoto founded to train Shinigami, located in the Seireitei. Six years is the standard course. Ichigo never attended, which several captains mention.
Silbern
The Wandenreich's palace, hidden inside the shadow of Soul Society itself for a thousand years. Yhwach built it in a place the Shinigami were physically incapable of searching, which is how an army was assembled next door without anyone noticing.
Soul King Palace
The realm above Soul Society where the Soul King is kept and the Royal Guard live. Reaching it requires the Ōken. It is divided between the Guard's domains, each one a self-contained territory built around what its holder does.
Soul Society
The afterlife of this setting and the counterweight to the Human World, made of Reishi rather than matter. It comprises the Seireitei and the Rukongai, and the balance of souls between it and the Human World is the thing every faction in the series is ultimately fighting over.
Study Chamber
A room within the Soul King Palace set aside for the Royal Guard's research.
Sōkyoku Hill
The execution ground overlooking the Seireitei, where the Sōkyoku is raised. The Soul Society arc converges on it, and by the end almost every captain in the Gotei 13 is standing on it.
Three Worlds
The Human World, Soul Society and Hueco Mundo, held in balance by the number of souls moving between them. Destroying any one of them collapses the other two, which is the constraint every plan in the series has to work around.
Urahara Shōten
A shabby sweet shop in Karakura Town that sells Shinigami equipment to anyone who needs it, run by Kisuke Urahara with Tessai, Jinta and Ururu. There is a training ground under the floor roughly the size of a desert.
Valley of Screams
The space between the Human World and Soul Society where discarded memories collect and take form as the Dark Ones. It is the setting of the second film.
Valley of Screams/Movie Continuity
The film's treatment of the space between worlds, where lost memories accumulate into beings with wills of their own.
Vestibule Road
The approach within the Soul King Palace leading to the inner chambers.
Wahrwelt
The city Yhwach builds by absorbing Soul Society into the Wandenreich's realm, an inverted structure where the ground is above the occupants. The final arc is fought through it as it collapses.
