Kenpachi Zaraki took his name from the most violent district in the Rukongai and his title by killing the previous Kenpachi. He captains the 11th Division without ever having heard his sword's name, fights with one hand, wears an eyepatch that eats his Reiatsu, and hangs bells in his hair so opponents can hear him coming. All of it is a handicap system. Kenpachi's problem has never been winning, it is finding anyone who can make the fight last.

His fight with Ichigo in the Soul Society arc is the series thesis on him: run through, grinning, he keeps swinging until both of them fall over, and he counts it as the best day he has had in years. He then spends arc after arc as the Gotei 13's unstoppable object, carving through Tosen, the Espada Nnoitra Gilga, and anything else that gets in front of him, with little Yachiru Kusajishi riding his shoulder.

The Thousand-Year Blood War finally makes him pay for the power he refused to understand. Retsu Unohana, the first Kenpachi, takes him into the underground prison and fights him to the death over and over until the limiter his own mind built comes off, dying so he can live at full strength. His sword finally tells him its name, Nozarashi, and turns from a chipped slab into a great cleaver that cuts a meteor in half. Against Gremmy Thoumeaux, the Sternritter whose imagination becomes reality, Kenpachi wins by being the one thing Gremmy imagines he cannot beat. In Wahrwelt he charges Pernida Parnkgjas, the left arm of the Soul King, and gets his arm twisted into a spiral for it, one of the rare fights someone else has to finish for him.
