Nnoitra Gilga is the Quinta Espada, and the aspect of death he represents is despair. He is enormously tall, permanently grinning, and completely uninterested in Aizen's plans except as a supply of opponents. His Hollow hole is in the eye socket behind his eyepatch, which he shows people mainly to explain why their attack did not work.

He has the hardest Hierro of any Espada, hard enough that Kenpachi Zaraki's first strike does not break the skin, and he treats that fact as an insult rather than an advantage. What Nnoitra wants is to be killed by someone stronger, and every fight he picks is an attempt to find that person. He attacks Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez while Grimmjow is already down, not out of strategy, but because a wounded rival is an offence to him.

Santa Teresa gives him six arms and a scythe in each, and he uses them to grind opponents down rather than out-think them. Kenpachi is the fight he has been waiting for his whole existence, and Nnoitra loses it standing up, refusing to fall until the body gives out. The series gives him no redemption and no backstory beyond a contempt for weakness that clearly started as contempt for his own. He dies satisfied, which is the only thing he ever asked for.
