Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi, who everyone calls Rose, is the captain of the 3rd Division, a post he held over a century ago and got back after Aizen's defeat. He is long-haired, unhurried, and more interested in music than in almost anything the Gotei 13 asks of him, which reads as affectation until his Zanpakutō comes out.

Kinshara is a whip that ends in a flower, and the Bankai, Kinshara Butōdan, is an orchestra. Sound becomes the weapon: notes that detonate, a conductor's gesture that moves the damage, an entire performance staged around one opponent. It is the most theatrical release in the series and it is not a joke at his expense.

He was among the officers Hollowfied in Aizen's experiment, spent a hundred years in a warehouse in Karakura Town with the other Visored, and returned to a division that had been run into the ground by Gin Ichimaru and then by nobody at all. Izuru Kira is his lieutenant now, which pairs the most flamboyant captain with the most withdrawn officer in the Seireitei. During the Wandenreich invasion he is killed while incapacitated and his corpse is raised by Giselle Gewelle to fight his own side, which is the indignity that arc specialises in.
