Ikkaku

Ikkaku Madarame spent most of the series as the 3rd Seat of the 11th Division, which was a deliberate choice rather than a ceiling. He hides the fact that he has achieved Bankai, because a known Bankai user gets promoted to captain of another division, and Ikkaku intends to die under Kenpachi Zaraki's command and nowhere else. He turned down the 3rd, 5th and 9th Divisions after Aizen's defection on exactly those grounds.

His Zanpakutō is Hōzukimaru, a spear that separates into a three-section staff, and his fighting style is loud, front-facing and completely without subtlety. The Bankai, Ryūmon Hōzukimaru, is a set of oversized blades linked by a chain that grows stronger the longer the fight runs, which suits a man whose stated goal is to be killed by someone worth it.

He is beaten badly more than once and the series does not soften it. Poww destroys the pillar he was defending and stands on his back while he is still trying to get up. What survives those losses is the thing the 11th Division actually runs on, which is that Ikkaku keeps getting up and keeps refusing the promotion. He also performs a victory dance after fights he is proud of, and Yumichika Ayasegawa has never once let him hear the end of it.
